3D laser scanning digitally captures the shape of objects with the use of a laser light.

3D scanning technology has revolutionised how projects are performed and completed. One of the main benefits of the technology is that one can visualise the final result of a project with excellent accuracy. But how does it work exactly? And how could it help your project?

Read on to find out how lasers are used to perform 3D scanning, and what services we provide…

What is 3D scanning?

3D laser scanning is a non-destructive technology that uses laser light to capture the shape of objects. 3D laser work by creating what are known as point clouds of data — this occurs as a result of the laser scanner capturing the size and shape of an object and transforming it into a 3D representation.

3D scanners create very precise representations by measuring fine details very quickly and accurately. The technology can be used to measure even complex shapes and contoured surfaces, making it very useful and versatile.

What does the process involve?

The first step in the process is data acquisition by means of 3D laser scanning. During this stage, the relevant object is scanned with laser light and sensor cameras, which record the shape of the laser lines in three dimensions.

As a result, the shape of the scanned object appears as a point cloud on a computer. When this data has been captured, it is brought together to create a three-dimensional representation.

What are the benefits?

There are many benefits to using 3D laser scanning technology when it comes to new buildings or extensions for an existing building. The technology allows for virtual walkthroughs of the site and for the site to be measured digitally. The advantages of this are considerable as it reduces travel time and the need for site visits, as well as sign-off times.

3D laser scanning allows for data to be captured and received very quickly, and both large and small spaces can be measured with precision. This means that structural steel design risks are reduced, and workflow can move as smoothly as possible.

How can we help?

At BridgeFab, we use 3D scanning technology to create precise 3D models. If you choose to use our services, our team will come to your job site and 3D scan the relevant area. This will allow us to streamline the documentation, planning and modelling of the process. At BridgeFab, we use surveying equipment that allows us to perform a range of tasks — this include measuring the site, using drafting software, and virtualising 3D space to create the specifications in 3D modelling and detailing software.

Thanks to modern technology, we can assist with more accurate and efficient fabrication and erection for your project. To find out more about the 3D scanning services that we provide, please have a look here.

To arrange a consultation with us or to request a quote, please don’t hesitate to get in touch or give us a call on (07) 3373 8777.

As well as 3D scanning, the team at BridgeFab also offers a range of other services. These include 3D detailing, steel fabrication, steel processing and erection of steel. We conform to the highest standards in the industry, and can assist with projects of any size. We have worked on many commercial, industrial and boutique projects over the years.
